The 92-foot sailboat Essence collided with the 600-foot freighter Barkald at about 4 a.m. Wednesday, September 20, about five miles north of Roanoke Shoals north of Riverhead, NY. The chef on the Essence, Gina Bortolotti, was killed in the accident, First Mate Nardus Bothma was treated for mild hypothermia and Ian Robberts, the boat’s captain, was reported in good condition.
The boat sank in 90 feet of water.
The five crew members, who were on the bridge of the freighter when it collided with the sailboat, did not have alcohol in their systems, the Coast Guard said Thursday; drug tests were not finished.
Both vessels were equipped with radar.
The Coast Guard had ordered the freighter anchored near New Haven, but the ship was cleared to leave Wednesday. Robberts and Bothma of the Essence were also tested for alcohol and drugs, but results were not yet available.
The Barkald had 29 crew and was heading to Halifax, Nova Scotia, from Bridgeport. The Essence, registered in the Caymans, was heading to Greenwich from Newport, R.I.
