Here’s another John Walker Lindh (the American mutt who thought it was a cool idea to fight US forces in Afghanistan who is now in San Quentin married to a guy named Bubba). This guy’s real name was Adam Perlman (now better known as Azzam the American) and his background is one of those and-why-didn’t-he-shoot-up-a-schoolhouse-full-of-kids cases in point.

This home-schooled son of a psychedelic musician was brought up on a goat farm with no running water or electricity, eventually rebelling against his Christian upbringing. He then developed a love for heavy metal music and exploring alternative religions.

(Is this hysterically prototypical or what?)

Intrigued by Islam he began attending a mosque in Orange County, worked as a caretaker and befriended a small group of young Muslim immigrants from Pakistan, joining in attacks on less orthodox worshippers.

He began calling himself Adam Yahiye Gadahn and was arrested for beating up an imam and expelled from the mosque. In 1998 he fled his family home south of Los Angeles and travelled to an al- Qaeda training camp in Afghanistan, three years before the September 11 attacks.

He’s been busy making taped messages with al Qaeda’s video propaganda division (what? You thought the al Qaeda command are the same illiterates they get to die for them? Not by a long shot).

Anyway Azzam has really gone to the top of the charts now, having become the first American to be charged with treason since the Second World War.
