A CLOSE LOOK AT MEDIA FANTASY LAND

You’ve often hear me railing against the MSM for its distortions, subjectivities, omissions and downright lies. Here is just another example, but a well explained one. It’s from The Washington Times, which is not to be confused with the Washington Post.

The journalist’s name is Joel Mowbray.

This comes to LRRP’sWorld from the folks at ACT for America.

"In the terrorism case of two young Egyptian nationals and University of South Florida students arrested Aug. 4 in South Carolina, fascinating twists and turns abound.

"There's a secret recording of the defendants discussing strategy shortly after their arrest. There's a YouTube video in which one of the defendants gave instructions in Arabic on converting a remote-control toy into a bomb detonator, which he allegedly told police was made to help people in Arab countries "defend themselves against the infidels invading their countries," specifically "against those who fought for the United States."

"That's not all. The father of one of the defendants, Youssef Megahed, all but pointed the finger at the co-defendant, Ahmed Mohamed, as the sole culprit, thus implying that his son was ignorant or duped. Yet this compelling drama has drawn scant attention from the mainstream media. And while apologists might attempt to write off the paucity of coverage for various reasons, a slew of other terrorism cases since September 11 have been met with the same media disinterest. [emphasis added].

"Following the arrests of Mr. Mohamed and Mr. Megahed on Aug. 4 with explosives in the trunk of their car — just seven miles from a naval weapons base in Goose Creek, S.C. — The Washington Post and New York Times made fleeting references. [emphasis added]. Each paper ran a brief overview from the Associated Press, with no independent reporting."

ISLAMO-FASCISM AWARENESS WEEK

This is a fund raising appeal, but — regardless — I suggest you read it in its entirety.

The fundamentalist — read: medieval assholes — are organized and are trying to stop the dissemination of truth on American campuses.

Just read this and research it. The left and their fundmentalist allies are taking America away from YOU.

"DEAR FELLOW AMERICAN,

Even before our Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week began, we were being attacked by radical leftists with a fake flyer at George Washington University- a deceitful hoax that was revealed in the Washington Post and on Fox News.

And now during the week we're seeing our opponents mount new attacks, threats and intimidation daily. They want to kill this event because they knew know that awareness about Islamo Fascism means the end of their homicidal enterprise. I'm asking for your help to keep them from succeeding.

For Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week we've organized events on well over 100 campuses across the country. Our campus coordinators - brave young men and women willing to go up against the radical left to get the truth to their fellow students - are working night and day against incredible odds to make the Week a success.

Our goal is to give our enemy the name it deserves- Islamo Fascism; to lay bare the unholy alliance between American leftists and our enemies in the war on terror; and to create a national movement that will call it what it is and stand up to it.

We've had dramatic results so far. At Tulane University on Monday, some 1,500 people turned out to hear Ann Coulter. It took 15 police officers and Ann's personal security to keep the crowd at bay.

Robert Spencer faced a rowdy crowd at De Paul, courageous Arab-American intellectual Nonie Darwish was confronted by a militant communist group at UC Berkeley. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison I shocked even the protesters with a large poster of a Muslim woman on her knees being shot in the back of the head for some real or imagined insult to fundamentalism.

But the most hostile crowd so far was at my Emory University appearance last night, where protesters became so disruptive that the police were called in to escort me off the stage only a half hour into my speech.

Unless the left succeeds in silencing us, Islamo Fascism Awareness Week will be the largest demonstration ever staged by conservatives on American college campuses. By the end of the week, over 30 speakers such as Coulter, Spencer and former Sen. Rick Santorum will have appeared on campuses across the country- from UC Berkeley to Columbia; from Emory to Penn State.

But the opposition is building, both in its intensity and its potential for violence. (I have been forced to provide bodyguards for all our speakers and the campus police have been on high alert at every school where they have appeared). The entire political left, from the Revolutionary Communist Party to the Young Democrats, is up in arms against us. Campus Progress, a part of the George Soros-Hillary Clinton operation, has put up a "kit" for attacking Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week. The violent extreme left is thus urged on with a wink and a nod by the "moderate" left.

They are joined by the whole array of Muslim groups: CAIR, the Muslim Public Affairs Council, the Muslim American Society, the Muslim Students Association and the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Council - groups who claim to oppose Muslim terrorism, but when the opportunity arises to join us in exposing it, find themselves on the side that defends jihad rather than on the side that defends Muslim women, homosexuals and "infidels" from the homicidal violence of Islamo fascists.

In the process of organizing Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week we have discovered hundreds of courageous students who organized the events on their campuses in the face of constant attacks not only by fellow students but by professors and administrators who control their academic future. We are working with a new generation of conservative young people who will actually believe the War on Terror is worth fighting and their country worth defending, despite the left's best efforts to intimidate them.

I write you now to ask you to support these brave students and the new, pro-American and anti-jihad movement they are creating. I write also to ask you to help me keep Islamo Fascism Awareness Week from being derailed by the left's violence and intimidation.

This must be a permanent campaign - to help these young people continue the awareness campaign . . . to organize on more campuses... to make sure that the left does not silence what some are already calling one of the most important public information campaigns of our era- to publicize the message about Islamo Fascism beyond the campuses, to the American people at large. Follow this link to make a secure, online donation today.

No contribution you've ever given before will have such a dramatic effect as what you give now. Every dollar you pledge will help us to keep building awareness about the Islamo fascists who wish us dead and our country crippled. This is our chance to strike back at them and to build a movement that will deny them an intellectual haven on America's college campuses.

Finally, we are waking up Americans to the real nature and seriousness of the threat against us. We must continue to build on our success, and we can't do it without your help. Please give whatever you can afford today.

My Sincere Thanks,

MEDIEVAL IDIOTS

Check this out. A bunch of the al Qaeda support sites on th Web are freaking out and saying Al Jazeera is siding with us due to a tape of bin Laden the station released.

These primitive MFers — they call us Crusaders. Are these people actually living on this planet? If they are, perhaps now would be a good time for some selective genocide — are pissed that bin Laden pointed out that they're all lunatics ... well, that's my interpretation.

HERE'S the complete story a la WAPO.

McCAIN ON HILLARY AND WOODSTOCK

From today's Patriot Post.

"One piece of pork that actually went down to defeat was $1 million for a museum remembering the 1969 Woodstock Concert. Upon hearing of the earmark’s insertion into a spending bill, the owners of the property donated $4,600 to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. GOP senator and presidential candidate John McCain (AZ), who spent 1969 (and several other years) in the horrific Hanoi Hilton, responded with an outstanding barb: “Hillary tried to get a million dollars for the Woodstock museum. I understand it was a major cultural and pharmaceutical event. I couldn’t attend. I was tied up at the time.”"

Hands down, that wins LRRP's World's Best Line of the Week Award!

Hear, hear.

WOODRUFF UPDATE

Here's a report on correspondent Bob Woodruff, who was nearly killed in an IED incident in Iraq. Interesting reading and interesting what he's trying to do for wounded vets.

Go HERE to read the full story.

This guy — by virtue of what happened to him — gets to say his piece here.

IN MEMORIAM — 1983

Twenty four years ago (1983) terrorists — you know, those guys we've been fighting over oil in Iraq and Afghanistan only since they blew up the WTC — bombed the Marine barracks at Beirut airport in Lebanon killing 241 members of the 24th Marine Amphibious Unit.

Our prayers for those Marines.

GLOBAL WARMING ... BALDERDASH

Just caught the end of a piece on ABC's 20/20 (I think) by reporter John Stossel in which he interviews a few of the (many) scientists who think the global warming BS is so much unscientific, purchased, political, poppy cock.

It's not easy for a scientist to say that in today's media, since they're usually blackballed if they dare whisper anything scientific that doesn't toe the line, but these guys were involved with that government report and bailed out on it when it became obvious that it wasn't concerned with empirical evidence, but was trying to prove a predetermined result. (It was also populated by non-scientists, so how you get a scientific report out of it is a tad bewildering, no?)

Lookit ... sure there's global warming. But there always has been and always will be, just like there will always be global cooling and ice ages.

Does that mean we should just go ahead and pollute? No, but it also doesn't mean that we should spend zillions of dollars on controls that are based on flawed scientific (and sometimes wrong science) evidence, or emotional and politically-driven extrapolations.

Anyway ... hear, hear, to Stossel for having the balls to show the other side of the issue.

I think they call that journalism, but it's been so long since I've seen any that I forget.

A PRAYER OF THANKS

THIS WEEK'S LRRP's World LITERARY AWARD GOES TO ...

...Military.Com for their opening line describing a new .45 caliber submachinegun under development in North Carolina.

"For those who believe a .45 caliber round is the best way to tell an enemy to stop - and fans of the .45's knock-down power are legion - the only thing better would be a chorus shouting "stop," almost in unison."

If you've shot a .45 sub or a .45 round in any of its many formats, you probably think this is as hysterical as I do. If you haven't, well ... trust me. It's a great line and the first part makes a teriffic bumper sticker.

HERE'S TO THE RANGERS

That is, the first of the Army Rangers.

Tomorrow marks the 63rd anniversary of the 6th Ranger Infantry Battalion securing outlying islands in the Phillipines and guiding naval forces to the landing beaches.

Preliminary ops for the Leyte invasion began at dawn with minesweeping operations and the movement of the 6th Rangers toward three small islands in Leyte Gulf. Although delayed by a storm, the Rangers were on Suluan and Dinagat by 1230. On Suluan they dispersed a small number of Japanese defenders and destroyed a radio station, while they found no enemy on Dinagat. On both, the Rangers proceeded to erect navigation lights for the amphibious transports to follow three days later. The Rangers occupied the third island Homonhon, without opposition the next day.

Hear, hear!

ON THIS DAY ...

Actually, it's October 16, but it happened in 1891.

Just when you think you knew your American History — or needed the perfect name for a bar — something new pops up. I seem to recall something about Valparaiso and war, and I guess this is it.

Courtesy of the men and women at the Navy News Service for this little tidbit.

"A brawl between American Sailors and Chilean nationals outside the True Blue Saloon in Valparaiso, Chile, resulted in two American Sailors killed, 17 wounded (five seriously) and many arrested. The incident sparked a diplomatic crisis that lasted for months, occasionally threatening war between the two countries, until a settlement was reached."

Gotta' love them Swabbies.

FLAG DE-RAISING UPDATE

If this doesn't piss you off ... then move the hell to another country.

Guess what? The ACLU says it's okay to run an American flag beneath another country's flag.

Here's a momentous moment in LRRP's World.

Fuck you, ACLU. (First time I've exercised my right to free speech by using that particular word.)

Apparently the TV station (KRNV, an NBC affiliate) that ran the piece about the Mexican flag being run over an American flag and the vet who took it down has taken the video off its site, although the story remains, and is now getting worse. The Reno PD agrees with the ACLU, but I can't tell if this is a case of life imitating art, a la Reno 911.

I'd like to say I discovered this, but I didn't ... here's where I found out about it, and it includes several e-mails to protest the fact to the station management. (yes, the blog looks familiar. It's called a template and apparently the owner has as much good taste in design as I do).

FYI (Whether you like it or not), we're the host country. Obey OUR rules and regs.

"When flags of States, cities, or localities, or pennants of societies are flown on the same halyard with the flag of the United States, the latter should always be at the peak. When the flags are flown from adjacent staffs, the flag of the United States should be hoisted first and lowered last. No such flag or pennant may be placed above the flag of the United States or to the right of the flag of the United States (the viewer's left). When the flag is half-masted, both flags are half-masted, with the US flag at the mid-point and the other flag below."

CALL IT WHAT YOU WILL ... IT SAVES LIVES

Those good ol' pricks at the new york times are at it again.

This time they (along with the administration ass who leaked it) leaked a memo about interrogation techniques, which "provided explicit authorization to barrage terror suspects with a combination of painful physical and psychological tactics, including head-slapping, simulated drowning and frigid temperatures."

And?

Well, naturally, being it's an election year, every mutt in the world will jump on the band wagon now and demand that terrorist suspects be treated fairly.

Sort of like how they treat our folks who have the misfortune to be caught.

Look it. Anyone who knows anything about persuasion knows that torture has a specific use(and believe me, I don't consider that crap torture. They did that to us in training during E&E courses if we were stupid enough to get caught).

If the info required is time sensitive, sometimes you have to stretch the borders of decency, but that's how things work in combat condition. C'est la guerre, as they say in The Legion.

Get used to it, and quit crying. It's about saving soldiers, not someone getting their rocks off.

US VET REMOVES ILLEGAL MEX FLAG ... MAY BE CHARGED

Something else the MSM doesn’t want you to hear about (go and see if this made your news), and for a couple of reasons: 1) it might prompt others to stand up for their country; 2) the guy might get applauded; 3) if enough people hear about it the guy might not get charged; 4) they’d prefer doing Spanish language editions since there is money to be made in that untapped market.

And for those who think this is absolutely FAH-bew-luss the law says it’s constitutionally illegal [NOTE: this is incorrect. It sucks, but apparently the Constitution doesn't say that. My bad, but I don't care. It's morally reprehensible to dishonor something for which so many have died defending. Period. — GPJ / 10/6/07]

If you want to abuse the First Amendment (among others), then you’ll have to play by the book that comes with it. [If it was okay to do it, it's okay to stop it. I assume all Americans are allowed free speech. — GPJ / 10/6/07]

Anyway …

Here’s the story:

“A Veteran from Reno, Nevada has hit headlines after he took matters into his own hands yesterday and tore down a Mexican flag that was being illegally flown above a U.S. flag at a local business.

“News station krnv News 4 had received calls yesterday afternoon from angry residents complaining about the Mexican flag.

“When the station sent a reporter to investigate the Veteran took the opportunity to make a statement in front of the cameras.

“The man commented, “I’m Jim Brossert and I took this flag down in honor of my country with a knife from the United States army. I’m a veteran, I am not going to see this done to my country. if they want to fight us, then they need to be men, and they need to come and fight us, but I want somebody to fight me for this flag. They're not going to get it back.”

OH. SO THAT'S WHY YOU'RE LIKE THIS

Here's a report from Scientific American that many of you may use to explain my behavior!

"Climbing Mount Everest is not so difficult; the hard part is getting down intact. According to a recent brain imaging study, almost no one does. Of thirteen climbers in the study who attempted Mount Everest, none returned without brain damage. The study also scanned the brains of climbers who attempted less extreme summits. For those of us who love to climb, the results are less than elevating. It seems that almost no one, whether the weekend warrior chaperoned to the summit or the seasoned mountaineer, will return from the high peaks with a brain in the same condition it was in beforehand."

(My highest is 13,000 so that doesn't include me ... who? You talking to me?)

For those of you interested in climbing/mountaineering, HERE'S the complete article.

Duh.... which way did those Iranians go?

THE GREAT IRANIAN FREAK OUT

From my buddy Dean ... ya gotta' love technology

SILENCE IN SYRIA, PANIC IN IRAN
Written by Dr. Jack Wheeler

Wednesday, 19 September 2007

One of India's top ranking generals assigned to liaise with the Iranian military recently returned to New Delhi from several days in Tehran - in a state of complete amazement.

"Everyone in the government and military can only talk of one thing," he reports. "No matter who I talked to, all they could do was ask me, over and over again, 'Do you think the Americans will attack us?' 'When will the Americans attack us?' 'Will the Americans attack us in a joint operation with the Israelis?' How massive will the attack be?' on and on, endlessly. The Iranians are in a state of total panic."

And that was before September 6. Since then, it's panic-squared in Tehran. The mullahs are freaking out in fear. Why? Because of the silence inSyria.

On September 6, Israeli Air Force F-15 and F-16s conducted a devastating attack on targets deep inside Syria near the city of Dayr az-Zawr. Israel's military censors have muzzled the Israeli media, enforcing an extraordinary silence about the identity of the targets. Massive speculation in the world press has followed, such as Brett Stephens' Osirak II? in yesterday's (9/18) Wall St. Journal.

Stephens and most everyone else have missed the real story. It is not Israel's silence that "speaks volumes" as he claims, but Syria's. Why would the Syrian government be so tight-lipped about an act of war perpetrated on their soil?

The first half of the answer lies in this story that appeared in the Israeli media last month (8/13): Syria's Antiaircraft System Most Advanced In World. Syria has gone on a profligate buying spree, spending vast sums on Russian systems, "considered the cutting edge in aircraft interception technology."

Syria now "possesses the most crowded antiaircraft system in the world," with "more than 200 antiaircraft batteries of different types," some of which are so new that they have been installed in Syria "before being introduced into Russian operation service."

While you're digesting that, take a look at the map of Syria:

Notice how far away Dayr az-Zawr is from Israel. An F15/16 attack there is not a tiptoe across the border, but a deep, deep penetration of Syrian airspace. And guess what happened with the Russian super-hyper-sophisticated cutting edge antiaircraft missile batteries when that penetration took place on September 6th.

Nothing.

El blanko. Silence. The systems didn't even light up, gave no indication whatever of any detection of enemy aircraft invading Syrian airspace, zip, zero, nada. The Israelis (with a little techie assistance from us) blinded the Russkie antiaircraft systems so completely the Syrians didn't even know they were blinded.

Now you see why the Syrians have been scared speechless. They thought they were protected - at enormous expense - only to discover they are defenseless. As in naked.

Thus the Great Iranian Freak-Out - for this means Iran is just as nakedly defenseless as Syria. I can tell you that there are a lot of folks in the Kirya (IDF headquarters in Tel Aviv) and the Pentagon right now who are really enjoying the mullahs' predicament. Let's face it: scaring the terror masters in Tehran out of their wits is fun.

It's so much fun, in fact, that an attack destroying Iran's nuclear facilities and the Revolutionary Guard command/control centers has been delayed, so that France (under new management) can get in on the fun too.

On Sunday (9/16), Sarkozy's foreign minister Bernard Kouchner announced that "France should prepare for the possibility of war over Iran's nuclear program."

All of this has caused Tehran to respond with maniacal threats. On Monday (9/17), a government website proclaimed that "600 Shihab-3 missiles" will be fired at targets in Israel in response to an attack upon Iran by the US/Israel. This was followed by Iranian deputy air force chief Gen. Mohammad Alavi announcing today (9/19) that "we will attack their (Israeli) territory with our fighter bombers as a response to any attack."

A sure sign of panic is to make a threat that everyone knows is a bluff. So our and Tel Aviv's response to Iranian bluster is a thank-you-for-sharing yawn and a laugh. Few things rattle the mullahs' cages more than a yawn and a laugh.

Yet no matter how much fun this sport with the mullahs is, it is also deadly serious. The pressure build-up on Iran is getting enormous. Something is going to blow and soon. The hope is that the blow-up will be internal, that the regime will implode from within.

But make no mistake: an all-out full regime take-out air assault upon Iran is coming if that hope doesn't materialize within the next 60 to 90 days. The Sept. 6 attack on Syria was the shot across Iran's bow.

So - what was attacked near Dayr az-Zawr? It's possible it was North Korean "nuclear material" recently shipped to Syria, i.e., stuff to make radioactively "dirty" warheads, but nothing to make a real nuke with as the Norks don't have real nukes (see Why North Korea's Nuke Test Is Such Good News, October 2006).

Another possibility is it was to take out a stockpile of long-range Zilzal surface-to-surface missiles recently shipped from Iran for an attack on Israel.

A third is it was a hit on the stockpile of Saddam's chemical/bio weapons snuck out of Iraq and into Syria for safekeeping before the US invasion of April 2003.

But the identity of the target is not the story - for the primary point of the attack was not to destroy that target. It was to shut down Syria's Russian air defense system during the attack. Doing so made the attack an incredible success.

Syria is shamed and silent. Iran is freaking out in panic. Defenseless enemies are fun.

IN MEMORIAM — SOLDIER'S DEBT PAID

Your son, my lord, has paid a soldier's debt. — Wm. Shakespeare, Hamlet, Act V

October 3 marks the 14th anniversary of the raid in Mogadishu in which 19 American soldiers were killed in the contacts immortalized in the book and movie Black Hawk Down. Although often thought of as a 75th Ranger ops, Navy SEALs, Air Force Pararescuemen and SOCOM pilots were also involved in the battle, and the rescue element that extricated the Rangers, et al., was composed of US 10th Mountain Division troopers, as well as armor elements of Pakistani and Malaysian military.

Lost in the memory of the day was the fact that the object of the raid — capturing some mutts — was successful and that somewhere between 700 and 1500 Somalia street fighters were killed during the attack. Seventy-three Amercians were wounded in the attack and rescue/wrap up.

The two Blackhawk helicopters taken down were hit by RPGs fired by al Qaeda fighters.

PROFILE IN COURAGE

And not the usual political, leftist or journalistic definition.

"Airman Phillip King

"On 8 August 2006, in Ebrahimkhel, Afghanistan, just north of Kandahar, Air Force Senior Airman Phillip King was leading a convoy to help the Afghan National Police (ANP) and Afghan National Army (ANA) when a rocket-propelled grenade landed within five yards of his Humvee. A full-scale insurgent attack came right on its tail.

"Returning fire, King positioned his Humvee to shield the convoy against the incoming barrage. When a second RPG blast gave him a concussion, King persisted, exposing himself to intense enemy fire to direct defensive fire by Afghan soldiers. This allowed an ANA soldier to neutralize the enemy site using a hand grenade.

"As King led his team out of danger amid continued sniper fire, he discovered a second ambush site where Taliban forces had entrapped five Afghan soldiers with gunfire. King maneuvered his vehicle, freed the soldiers, then led the ANP and ANA troops to establish a perimeter.

"Still taking heavy fire from machine guns, small arms, and RPGs, King’s team called in air support. Just before it arrived, King again exposed himself to intense fire to mark the targets for the bombers, which effectively took out the Taliban position. Airman King’s actions saved the lives of more than a dozen Afghans and helped eliminate 20-25 Taliban militants. His team suffered no casualties.

"King, who volunteered for the 365-day Afghanistan deployment, called it “another day on the job.” The U.S. military called it heroism in ground combat. For his actions, Airman King was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat “V” for Valor."

From the good folks at the Patriot Post. You can find out more about them over on the left side (heart be still) of LRRP's World

AND IN THE WORLD OF MOTORSPORTS AND FOOTBALL

If you were outside partaking in a glorious day's worth of weather Sunday, you missed some good action in NASCAR, the NFL and even Formula 1 (for a change).

Wunderkind Lewis Hamilton of disgraced McLaren/Mercedes (an engineer from the team was found with a 900-page document outlining Ferrari plans/test results/etc., a few weeks ago and banished from the Constructor's Championship. Why their drivers are still allowed to score in the Driver's Championship can only be attributed to creative law interpretation and ... oh yeah ... money.) won his first race in the rain at Japan. The race saw some incredible duels (on and off road) that made the event well worth watching — the latter three words rarely used in Formula 1. Kudos to Hamilton.

The NASCAR race in Kansas got off to a slow start in the rain as well, but the end result was a controversial win for Greg Biffle (he may or may not have run out of gas and thus ... never mind), a great second place run by homeboy Clint Bowyer and great runs by Johnson and Gordon as well. As has been the pattern recently, seven of the Chase participants crashed out including the ever petulant Tony Stewart, who probably shouldn't have been on the track when his tire cut. This was a race worth watching for the last 50-or-so laps sprint to darkness (the race was called on account of sundown). A good one.

Then there were the Giants, who recorded 12 sacks against the previously dominant Eagles. Six by Ossie Uemenyora (excuse the spelling ...I'm in a rush). The offensive performance was so-so (by both teams. The final was 16 -3), but the Giant defense looked like the kind of defense we Giant fans expect. LT was at the game which made the sack performance even more special.

I think the Mets lost. Not real sure what that means, but I think they're out of the playoffs, though I could be wrong.

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES

In any other country — in the free world or any other world including the planet Ork — it would be treason, but in the good ol' US of A it's merely called "good journalsim."

Nonetheless, the New Yorker magazine, ran a piece — and someone ought to, at the very least, toss the source into Gitmo — about administration plans to surgically strike Iran.

First Amendment arguments not withstanding, I can only hope an MSM outlet got it right.

Any parents of Air Force/Navy personnel who die while partaking in these raids might want to consider a suit against the publication. The basis? Alerting enemy combatants to battle planning.

Other than that ...

If you can't nuke Iran, at least bomb the hell out of them.

It'll be sort of like an American version of a Miss Manners "Thank You" note for sending the sand troll over here to put flowers on the WTC.
