FISHERMAN'S POETRY

If you love the sea and have a poetical bent, you might want to check out New Bedford, MA's Fisherpoetry event to be held April 9. At the Seaman’s Bethel (15 Johnny Cake Hill). The program is presented free of charge.

Think cowboy poets, but of the commercial fishing variety.

Here's one written by a long-time New Bedford fisherman. Not exactly iambic pentameter, but close.

Seafood’s Costs
By Phil Ashworth

For those who eat fish and scallops and growl at the price
Take a single trip offshore with me
To shovel rocks, snow, and pound ice
And after ONE good beating on a cold winter’s day
I guarantee, you’ll never again, gripe about the fisherman’s pay!

Thanks to Ed D for the tip.
